Moving forward. Weightless. Open to opportunities and experience. Relishing each moment. Free from the chains of the past.

Does this sound like a good way to live? Would you enjoy this state of being?

Let go

The Challenge

We all have this capability. But human nature can sometimes be difficult to overcome. We love to hold onto pain and suffering from the past. We love to hold grudges for people who have done us wrong. “It is who we are”, we say, as we trudge along, battle-hardened through life.

Jealousy and envy find their way into our psyche as well, holding onto our dreams and suffocating them like a pillow over our face in a bad horror movie.

Traumas can haunt us for ages. We didn’t ask for that to happen to us. But it did. And often find it hard to let go of the unpleasant images, feelings, and thoughts that come associated with these past events.

What do we do? How do we live in the face of so much dead weight? How can we possibly carry this around with us and still be able to walk ahead?

The secret lies not in some new religion or cult. It doesn’t exist in a new fasting regimen or drug that helps you find yourself.

The secret to moving forward in life free, unencumbered, light, and hopeful lies in the magic of Letting Go.

Let Go.

This may seem over simplistic and trite. But I can assure you, this is the path forward. People can spend years and thousands of dollars seeing therapists to relieve some of this pain and suffering. Although that can help, it all begins with a decision inside of your mind and spirit, to simply let go.

The Formula

Here are three actions you can take to get you started down this sun-kissed path.

1. Forgive Yourself

Surely you have done some things that you aren’t very proud of. We’ve all made mistakes. Forgive yourself for these things and let them go. Learn from them and take the lessons forward with us so we don’t have to learn them again. But it’s ok. You were a different person then than you are now. You’ve grown and evolved. Now it’s time to forgive yourself and move forward unshackled to the mistakes of the past.

2. Forgive Others

You know that thing that other person did to you that you think about too often? They’ve totally forgotten about it. When you hold onto these things they only affect you. They needlessly weigh you down with heavy luggage on your journey. Forgive them and let it go. Like you, everyone makes mistakes. Now, if you’ve given someone several chances and they’ve continually done wrong, then cut them off from your life. Forgiving someone doesn’t mean letting them have free reign over your emotions. Be firm in your quest for peace and happiness. Create boundaries and enforce them. But first of all, forgive and let go.

Let go

3. Release Anger

The world is not as we think it should be. Not everyone shares our same values, visions, and dreams for humanity. Although that can be a challenge, it also creates the beautiful diversity that we see. It’s easy to get angry or frustrated when people share thoughts or stances that are in direct opposition to ours. In situations like these it’s critical to draw the boundary between the things we can control and the things we can’t control. We can’t control others. We can only control ourselves. So in a situation where you have a deep disagreement with someone, remember this. Share your view, speak your truth, lay out the facts as you see them. But realize this is as far as you can go. You can’t make anyone believe or agree with you. You can’t decide the entire fate of humanity. There is so much that is out of our control. Realize this, and keep anger on the outside looking in.

Letting go might sound easy, but it takes work. Daily meditation, self-hypnosis, and continual practice are some of the best ways to stay on the path. Certainly, as humans, we will fall off of our horse on occasion. This is inevitable. But the most important thing is to get back on and keep riding. Keep improving. Keep growing. And keep letting go of that which no longer serves you.
